Types of Bone Marrow

There are two types of bone marrow—red and yellow. Red bone marrow also known as myeloid tissue, while yellow marrow consists of fat cells. Both types of bone marrow contain numerous blood vessels and capillaries. At birth, all bone marrow is red.

Red marrow can be found in flat bones like the breast bone, skull, vertebrate, shoulder blades, hip bone, and ribs. Red marrow can also be found at the ends for long bones such as the femur and humerus. White, red, and platelets blood cells are produced in the red marrow. Red blood cells carry oxygen, white blood cells fight diseases, and platelets are essential for blood clotting. White blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets exist and are suspended in the blood’s plasma – the liquid component of blood.
